The story behind our ELO-based UFC fighter rankings

Our Inspiration

UFCGoat.com is inspired by the work of Trixter Productions. Their innovative approach to applying the ELO rating system to UFC fighters formed the foundation of our website.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Trixter Productions for their original idea and the algorithm that powers our ELO ratings.

Our Methodology

UFCGoat.com uses the ELO rating system to rank UFC fighters based on their performance history. Originally developed for chess, our ELO system has been adapted specifically for mixed martial arts competition.

How Our ELO System Works:

  • Starting Point: Every fighter begins with a base rating of 1000 points.
  • Points Exchange: After each fight, points are exchanged between the fighters based on the outcome.
  • Expected Results: When a higher-rated fighter defeats a lower-rated fighter, fewer points change hands. But when an underdog wins, they gain significantly more points.
  • Finish Bonuses: Knockouts and submissions result in greater point exchanges compared to decisions, rewarding decisive victories.
  • Ranking Metrics: We track both current ELO (reflecting recent performance) and peak ELO (the highest rating a fighter has ever achieved).

This system creates an objective, data-driven ranking that evolves with every UFC event, capturing both the current form and historical greatness of fighters.

Note: While our ELO system is comprehensive, it cannot account for every nuance of fighting. Factors like injuries, weight class changes, and extended layoffs may affect a fighter's true skill level beyond what the numbers show.
